The Children's Shelter

Last week, the Pear Analytics team visited The Children’s Shelter, a non-profit refuge for abandoned, abused and neglected children in the San Antonio area.

Armed with a rainbow assortment of paints, brushes, rocks, and googly eyes (and of course, some delicious cookies), we helped the kids create their very own “pebble monsters,” using their imaginations. The results were amazing!

“The kids are going through a rough patch through no fault of their own,” said Ruth Whitenton, Chief Operations Officer at Pear. “We were able to provide some distraction and some smiles—the cookies helped!”

The Children’s Shelter has helped San Antonio’s kids for more than a century. Founded in 1901, the facility offers emergency shelter and care for local children in crisis.  It also assists with finding appropriate foster home placement, permanent living arrangements, or adoptive families for children in need.

Additionally, the shelter offers various family strengthening programs, which aim to help at-risk families and prevent potential crisis situations in San Antonio and Bexar County. These programs teach nurturing, parenting skills and more valuable strategies to families and parents with limited means. The Children’s Shelter houses the KCI Treatment Center, which provides health care and support for children who have suffered serious emotional damage or trauma.
